The Speaker on May 9, 2008 was Captain Dan Cloyd, USN.  Captain Cloyd spoke of the high quality of the volunteer service personnel that staff the military services which serve our country. After his address Captain Cloyd presented the U.S. Navy League sword to the outstanding 2008 University of Virginia NROTC Graduate. 

Eric Lindenbaum, president of the Charlottesville Council, reminds us that many of our fellow wounded Comrades in Arms are in the hospital. Charlottesville Council Navy League Sword Recipient for 2008

Captain Dan Cloyd  presents Midshipman Ryan Pau, USN  the 2008 Charlottesville Council Navy League/Captain Ed Davis sword.  The Charlottesville Council, each year,  presents a sword to the outstanding Midshipman from the University of Virginia NROTC Unit.  The  2008 sword was presented in the memory of Captain Ed Davis who spent 7.5 years as a prisoner in the Hanoi Hilton.  Former recipients of the sword have gone on to exemplary careers in the Naval Service.

The Charlottesville Council of the Navy League enjoys a wonderful variety of prominent speakers who keep it up to date on the current condition of our military. Recent past speakers were:


Speaker on March 14, 2008 was Captain Al Folsom USCG. Captain Folsom addressed the subject of training personnel for the varied missions the Coast Guard performs under both peace and wartime conditions. Captain Folsom discussed the importance of, maintaining and keeping updated, the training of today's personnel and how it was accomplished.


We were fortunate in having as our speaker on January 11th, Commander Rick Miller, Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Mahan (DDG72). Commander Miller brought the council up to date on the Mahan's recent returned from deployment.


On May 11, 2007 Rear Admiral Brian Prindle, Commander Patrol and Reconnaissance Group, Norfolk, Va. spoke of the dedication, valor and courage of the men and women serving in our volunteer military today and in past conflicts.  He presented the 2007 Charlottesville Council Navy League sword to the graduating, top Navy Midshipman of the UVa NROTC. The sword was jointly endowed by the Charlottesville Council Navy League, and friends, in memory of Captain Ed Davis who spent seven-and-a-half years as a prisoner in the Hanoi Hilton. Captain Davis was an inspiration to all who knew, and served with him.


Speaker on April 13, 2007 was Vice Admiral Kevin P. Green, U.S. Navy (Retired).  He spoke on "The Role of Naval Forces in the Global War on Terror".


Speaker on March 9, 2007 meeting was Captain Todd Miller U.S.N. Captain Miller recounted his experiences as commanding officer of the U.S.S. Wasp (LHD-1). Captain Miller's pointed out that the U. S. Navy is not all war. He enumerated how many of the Navy's deployments are for humanitarian reasons. Where there is a disaster the Navy is one of the first responders. He reminded us that during times of war we sometimes overlook the many facets of the U. S. Navy and how proud we can be of the men, women, and their families, that sacrifice so much to preserve our freedom while simultaneously serving the rest of the world when disaster strikes.


Speaker on January 12, 2007 was Commander Paul E. Galanti USN(Ret.).  The luncheon was a joint meeting of the Charlottesville Council NLUS and the USNA Alumni. Paul Galanti was a prisoner of war for nearly seven years at North Vietnam's infamous "Hanoi Hilton". 


Speaker on October 13, 2006 was Rear Admiral Edward H. Deets, Vice Commander, Naval Network Warfare Command. He gave the members a enlightening insight into the complexities of warfare networking and the wonderful men and women who are its strength.


Speaker on September the 8th was Captain Jon William Kaufmann U.S.N. Captain Kaufmann gave an excellent presentation on the ships now being built and the governments new approach to their design and construction.


 Guest speaker on May 12, 2006 was Rear Admiral Michael P. Nowakowski who spoke on the current state of our Navy. He gave an enlightening presentation on how electronic implementation has affected the manning of our Naval Forces.


 Speaker at the April meeting was Donald E. Nuechterlein, International Relations and Foreign Policy Author, Scholar, Lecturer. He is the author of nine books on U.S. foreign policy.


Stephen S. Campbell, Systems Engineer and Program Manager at Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine, Charlottesville, Va. was the speaker at the March 10, 2006 meeting. He brought the members up to date on the U.S. Navy move to electronic paperless navigation. 


Speaker on January 13, 2006 was Rear Admiral Myers, Commander Carrier Strike Group Eight. He spoke extensively on the U.S. Naval Space Campaign, its importance in joint military efforts, and how the use of space is crucial to the success of the Carrier Strike Group and the overall U.S. Navy.


Captain Thomas H. Barge II was the speaker at the October 14, 2005 meeting. He delivered an enlightening update on the Submarine Service.


Speaker on September 9, 2005 was Captain John. R. Warnecke. 


The speaker at the May 13, 2005 meeting was Vice Admiral John Morgan


The March 11, 2005 meeting was a joint meeting of the Charlottesville Council of the Navy League and the USNA Alumni Association. Captain Stephen J. Camacho, USN was the speaker.


The speaker on February 11, 2005 was Major Jared Hansbrough, USMC. His talk addressed his assignment as a member of the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee .


At the October 8, 2004 meeting Captain Eric J. Lindenbaum  presented an interesting talk on the Navy's expenditures in the present restrained fiscal environment.


Captain Maurice Montana was speaker at the September 10, 2004 meeting. 


Rear Admiral J. Kevin Moran, USN was speaker at the May 14, 2004 meeting.


Speakers at the April 9, 2004 meeting were Allan Van Wickler, Peter D. Thomas, James G. Simmonds, George B. Matthews and Luther Y. Gore.


Captain Ben Thomason, Chief of Staff 5th Coast Guard District, was speaker at the March 12, 2004 meeting. 


James Webb, former Secretary of the Navy, was the January 9, 2004 speaker at a joint meeting of the Navy League and the Naval Academy Alumni Association.


Theodore Roosevelt and the Navy League

The Navy League was founded in 1902 with the encouragement of President Theodore Roosevelt.

The Navy League of the United States is a civilian organization dedicated to the education of our citizens, including our elected officials, and the support of the men and women of the sea services and their families.

"It seems to me that all good Americans interested in the growth of their country and sensitive to its honor, should give hearty support to the policies which the Navy League is founded to further. For the building and maintaining in proper shape of the American Navy, we must rely on nothing but the broad and farsighted patriotism of our people as a whole."

Any American citizen interested in supporting the United States sea services (US Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Merchant Marine) is eligible for membership. Active duty military are not eligible for membership, but their spouses and families are eligible.
